I recently had the distinct pleasure of seeing the world premiere of the new musical Wonderland: Alice’s New Musical Adventure, the first of the Straz Center for the Performing Arts (formerly the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center) Broadway Genesis Project. It began previews in Tampa on November 24, 2009, opened on December 5, closing on January 3, and then opened to previews in Houston on January 15, with an official opening date of January 20, where it will play through February 14.
Janet Dacal, who can currently be seen in the world premiere production of the new Frank Wildhorn musical, Wonderland, will return to Broadway’s Tony Award-winning musical In the Heights on Feb. 19.
Wonderland: Alice’s New Musical Adventure officially opened in Houston at the Alley Theatre on Jan. 20, following previews which began Jan. 15. It will play through Feb. 14.

Our world lost a great shining star last week. The beautiful and graceful Jean Simmons, known for her roles in Guys and Dolls and Spartacus, and Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, died at her home in Santa Monica, California, on Friday, January 22, after a battle with lung cancer. She was 80 years old.

Broadway In Chicago recently announced that Wicked will return for an eight-week return engagement, beginning Dec. 1, 2010 through January 23, 2011. The current national tour company will return to play this engagement — interesting, since they were the company that began the original Chicago production before leaving another resident company.
Wicked previously played Chicago’s Ford Center for the Performing Arts, Oriental Theatre, for almost four years (June 24, 2005-Jan. 25, 2009). The eight-week engagement company is set to play the Cadillac Palace Theatre at 151 W. Randolph.

Corbin Bleu joined the cast of Broadway’s In the Heights last night, Jan. 25. Bleu, who starred as Chad Danforth in the “High School Musical” movies, plays the part of narrator Usnavi, originally played by the show’s creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda. He will perform for a 13-week run (until April 25).

Members of the revival cast of Broadway’s Finian’s Rainbow will reunite to perform and sign copies of the new 2009 cast album of the musical.
This will take place on Feb. 1 at 5 PM at the Lincoln Center-area Barnes and Noble at Lincoln Triangle, 1972 Broadway at 66th Street, in Manhattan.
Anticipated cast members include Cheyenne Jackson, Kate Baldwin, Guy Davis, Alina Faye, Jim Norton, Terri White and Rob Berman; the cast will perform for 15 minutes prior to CD signing session.
This critically-acclaimed revival of Finian’s Rainbow opened on Oct. 29, 2009, at Broadway’s St. James Theatre, and closed on Jan. 17.

Billy Elliot the Musical celebrated its 500th performance at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre yesterday, Jan. 24, during its 7:30 PM performance.
Billy Elliot the Musical, which won ten Tony Awards is the “joyous celebration of one boy’s journey to make his dreams come true. Set in a small town, the story follows Billy as he stumbles out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class, discovering a passion that takes him by surprise, and takes his whole family on an incredibly uplifting adventure.”

Broadway’s revival of Bye Bye Birdie, starring John Stamos and Gina Gershon, played its final performance at Henry Miller’s Theatre on Jan. 24, after 40 previews and 117 performances. The show began preview performances on Sept. 10 and officially opened on Oct. 15.
The Roundabout Theatre Company’s production received a two-week extension from an original closing date of Jan. 10.
