While many shows on Broadway are suffering due to the economy, there’s still some room for celebration: Disney’s The Little Mermaid is celebrating its first anniversary on Broadway today, January 10, 2009. It is playing at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, and as of now there is no talk of a closing date.
The popular under-the-sea show is based on the Disney animated film of the same name, which in turn was (VERY) loosely based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale. (Andersen wrote a not-so-happy ending.)
The current cast of Disney’s The Little Mermaid includes: Sierra Boggess (Ariel), Sherie Rene Scott (Ursula), Sean Palmer (Prince Eric), Norm Lewis (King Triton), Rogelio Douglas, Jr. (Sebastian), Eddie Korbich (Scuttle), Jonathan Freeman (Grimsby), Tyler Maynard (Flotsam), Eric LaJuan Summers (Jetsam), Robert Creighton (Chef Louis), and Trevor Braun and Brian D’Addario (both taking turns as Flounder).
Happy Anniversary, Little Mermaid!

Sherie can do much better than this. What a disappointment. Such a shame she wasn’t called for Hair, she’d make a good Sheila Franklin…

Just to update, since this article is from January 2009:
Sherie is no longer playing the role of Ursula in Disney’s The Little Mermaid. That role has been taken over by actress Faith Prince.
Sherie Rene Scott is currently performing Off-Broadway in her own autobiographical musical, Everyday Rapture, at Second Stage Theatre. The show began previews April 7, and officially opened Off-Broadway May 3, and is scheduled to play through June 14 (following a 2-week extension from original closing date, May 31).
Press notes describe Everyday Rapture:
EVERYDAY RAPTURE is the story of a young woman’s psycho-sexual-spiritual journey on the rocky path that separates her mostly Mennonite past from her mostly Manhattan future. Her life takes her from the cornfields of Kansas to the clover fields of New York (with a disturbing detour through YouTube). With a cast of five led by Sherie Rene Scott, EVERYDAY RAPTURE also features songs made famous by David Byrne, Roberta Flack, Mister Rogers, The Dap Kings and Judy Garland.
