If you’re excited about the upcoming premiere of the movie musical “Hairspray” (and who isn’t?), you’ll want to take note of this!

The soundtrack for the film version of the musical Hairspray was released in stores today, July 10th!

The CD features a total of 17 songs, which include three original numbers that don’t appear in the Broadway version; the titles of those are: “New Girl in Town,” “Ladies’ Choice,” and “Come So Far.” (Have no fear– the new songs were are also by the same songwriting pair who penned the original Broadway score of Hairspray– Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.)

As a special bonus you’ll get to hear all three actresses who originated the role of Tracy Turnblad on film, on Broadway, and in musical film. The song “Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now” is sung together by original film star Rikki Lake, original Broadway star Marissa Jaret Winokur, and the musical version’s film star Nikki Blonsky.

The cast includes Queen Latifah as Motormouth Maybelle, John Travolta as Edna Turnblad, Christopher Walken as Wilbur Turnblad, Amanda Bynes as Penny Pingleton, Zac Efron as Link Larkin, Brittany Snow as Amber von Tussel, Michelle Pfeiffer as Velma von Tussel, James Marsden as Corny Collins, Elijah Kelly as Seaweed, Allison Janney as Prudy Pingleton, and Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad.

The Broadway musical and forthcoming musical version of the film are both based on the 1988 John Waters movie. The musical film hits theatres nationwide on July 20.

After watching an HBO special on this last night, I’m actually more excited about the movie than I was earlier. I still can’t wrap my arms around John Travolta in the Harvey Fierstein/Divine role just yet – hopefully seeing will be believing.
