Corbin Bleu joined the cast of Broadway’s In the Heights last night, Jan. 25. Bleu, who starred as Chad Danforth in the “High School Musical” movies, plays the part of narrator Usnavi, originally played by the show’s creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda. He will perform for a 13-week run (until April 25).
In the Heights tells the universal story of a vibrant community in Manhattan’s Washington Heights – a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind.
The show won four 2008 Tony Awards: Best Musical, Best Score, Best Choreography, and Best Orchestrations.
Bleu is no stranger to the stage; he performed his credits include the Off-Broadway production of Tiny Tim is Dead and Brothers of the Knight (with Debbie Allen), as well as Footloose and Grease. He has been studying theatre arts for much of his life, having attended the Debbie Allen Dance Academy and the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts as a theatre major.
He has two solo albums out, the second of which just came out in 2009. His debut album was “Another Side,” which was released in May 2007; “Speed of Light” was released in 2009.
