Into the Woods Film Update: Meryl Streep & Johnny Depp Involved

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp

Walt Disney Pictures is making a film adaptation of Into the Woods, the often-dark but realistic musical portrayal of fairytales by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. The movie will begin filming in London this fall, reportedly in September.

Marc Platt, Rob Marshall, John DeLuca and Disney will be producing, while Rob Marshall will be directing.

Meryl Streep has been cast as the Witch, a role created on Broadway by Bernadette Peters. Rumors abound that Johnny Depp will also be cast, though it’s unclear whether he’ll star as the Baker or the Wolf.

I can definitely imagine Depp as the Wolf (from his outlandish roles like in “Pirates of the Caribbean” — savvy?), though he’s so flexible I could imagine him as the Baker as well. In my mind the Wolf wins out, though.

What do you think? Who should be cast in the other roles?
