MADtv’s Nicole Parker to Star as Elphaba in Wicked, Jan. 16

Nicole Parker, star of MADtv, will be taking over the role of Elphaba in Broadway’s Wicked from Marcie Dodd as of tonight, January 16, 2009. She is contracted to play Elphaba through mid-summer 2009.

In addition to her role on the sketch show MADtv, which she has performed on since 2003, her other screen credits include the parodies, “Meet the Spartans,” and “Disaster Movie,” and the upcoming summer film, “Funny People,” alongside Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen.

This is not her first foray into Broadway; she made her debut on the Great White Way in the Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me musical (July 2006 – January 2007). She also performed as Laurencia in Fuente Ovejuna for Waterwell Productions, a New York Theatre company which she co-founded.

She is no stranger to the stage, having performed at South Coast Repertory and Laguna Playhouse in California, and having studied Theatre and Voice at university; while in college she was part The Original Full Frontal Comedy, an improv troupe. Since then she has performed at the Falcon Theatre (as Pamina in The Magic Flute) and the Second City in Chicago (as Juliet in the Romeo and Juliet Musical), as well as in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and in Amsterdam’s comedy show Boom Chicago.

She is wrapping up her time on MADtv, but can be seen in prerecorded sketches through 2009, when the series itself ends. She is the longest-running female character on the series at this time.

Characters she has portrayed on MADtv include: Disney Girl, Pat-Beth LaMontrose (Inside Looking Out), Tori McLachlan, Candy Matsumoto (Hello Hollywood/Iraq, Hello!), Elisssa (Girlicous), and Amy Little (Nice White Lady), among others. She is perhaps best known for her celebrity impressions.

With her great impressions and knack for comedy, I can’t wait to see how she comes across as Elphaba. Sounds like she’ll be great!
