I know this is being covered a bit late, but I’m catching up with the news, and I can’t NOT discuss this.
In what is probably one of the shortest openings-closings on Broadway, The Story of My Life stands out. The show opened to previews on Feb. 3, opened to audiences on Feb. 19, and closed on Feb. 22.
How sad is that? And it sounded good, too. Sure, it didn’t have the flashy sets and whatnot, but it sounded like it had a decent storyline and music. Kind of like Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years, also a two-person show. Perhaps The Story of My Life would have fared better Off-Broadway, especially since it was in one of the smaller Broadway theatres, anyway (Booth Theater).
Will Chase (Rent, High Fidelity, Aida, The Full Monty, Miss Saigon) and Malcolm Gets (“Caroline in the City”) were the two stars, who played friends who grew up together, and age from 6 to 35.
According to press notes:
The Story of My Life tells the story of two childhood friends and how their friendship profiundly defined their lives. Thomas Weaver is a best-selling, award-winning author. Alvin Kelby was his best friend for 30 years. But time can test the bonds of friendship, and when it does, Thomas calls on the only resource he has — his stories of Alvin –to learn where things went wrong. A richly melodic musical, The Story of My Life is a soaring tribute to the power of friendship and the people who change our lives forever.
I sure hope they release a recording of it someday; the music and the story are very powerful.
Don’t let its closing let it slip from your mind. Visit the official Story of My Life interactive website to listen two songs and share your friendship stories.
