Review: Wonderland: Alice’s New Musical Adventure (Tampa)

Music and scenes to note

The music covers the gamut; from smooth jazz, hip-hop, and salsa to boy band and ballad… they’ve got it all covered. And these songs are infectious – they will get stuck in your head! The boy band sequence (“One Knight”), featuring Alice’s first encounter with the White Knight (Jack), had the audience in hysterics, between the stereotypical boy band choreography and harmonies.

My personal favorites include:
“Once More I Can See,” in which Alice remembers her own childhood and uncovers the strength to go on in her journey;
“Curiouser and Curiouser,” which is a constant underlying theme throughout the show;
“Through the Looking Glass,” a catchy guitar-driven beat which features Alice and Jack preparing to enter through the Looking Glass – which is a prison that houses anyone who disobeys the Queen or the Hatter;
“Don’t Wanna Fall in Love,” which has since been removed from the show for doing little to enhance the plot – but it’s such a vibrant song!;
“ When Love Begins,” a tender moment shared between Alice and the White Knight;
“Finding Wonderland,” the show’s culminating song, with Alice reflecting all that she has learned in her time in Wonderland;
“I Am My Own Invention,” which I found to be an enlightening moment to Alice, in which she meets the author, Lewis Carroll, in a diversion from the original story, but which has an impact on this new retelling.

I own the original concept recording of the show, and was amazed at the difference between what is on the CD and in the show. The CD contains several songs that were cut early in Wonderland’s Tampa run. Judy Lisi, president of the Straz, recently reported that at least one song has been cut from the Houston engagement (“Don’t Wanna Fall In Love”) and four new songs have been added.

  1. Absolutely blown away with Wonderland. My husband and I are season ticketholders and love the Alley. But last night we had the pleasure of traveling to Broadway without leaving Houston! Wonderland is the theatre experience that one hopes to have. And Miss Dacal is a spectacular talent – a stunning beauty with the presence and gifts of a true star. An incredible musical with an equally amazing cast!
