I especially liked the creativity involved in the costumes, including the Caterpillar and his eight pairs of legs represented by eight ladies. This is made clear when they line up behind him holding umbrellas that make up his body as he waltzes across the stage.
The Queen of Hearts’ costume is another memorable one, with a dress that fans out like a deck of cards, and her ladies in waiting wear corresponding dresses with hearts on their rear ends – symbolic of kissing up to the queen, perhaps?!
The Mad Hatter is likely to take you aback at first; she’s not interested in storybook tea parties, for one thing. She’s interested in overthrowing the queen and removing imagination from Wonderland – her hats are just side notes. When we first meet her, the hat she’s wearing reminded me of a Napoleon-style hat, which makes sense with her political schemes.
The Jabberwocky makes an appearance as a misunderstood chef who likes to cook his victims, who he victimizes by making them face their deepest fears. He is also reminiscent of the Wizard of Oz; when he takes off his voice-altering mask, he’s just a regular guy.

Absolutely blown away with Wonderland. My husband and I are season ticketholders and love the Alley. But last night we had the pleasure of traveling to Broadway without leaving Houston! Wonderland is the theatre experience that one hopes to have. And Miss Dacal is a spectacular talent – a stunning beauty with the presence and gifts of a true star. An incredible musical with an equally amazing cast!
