London Premieres

Spring Awakening Opens in London, Feb. 3

Spring Awakening, the Tony Award-winning coming-of-age story of teen angst, opened to the public today in London, following previews from January 23.

The musical opened at the  Lyric Hammersmith, and is scheduled to continue through March 14 — a two-week extension from the original closing date of Feb. 28. Rumors of a move to the West End are rampant, as well.

Press notes describe the musical, based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play:

Spring Awakening boldly depicts a dozen young people and how they make their way through the thrilling, complicated, confusing and mysterious time of their sexual awakening. Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater’s score features songs that illuminate the urgency of adolescent self-discovery, the burning intensity of teen friendships, and the innate suspicion of the uncomprehending adult world. The story centers around a brilliant young student named Melchior, his troubled friend Moritz, and Wendla, a beautiful young girl on the verge of womanhood.

In a press statement, departing artistic director David Farr had this to say: “We at the Lyric are proud of our collaborative approach to making theatre and are celebrated for the modern and diverse audience that we reach with our work. The Spring Awakening team are ground-breaking artists and we’re thrilled to be working alongside them to bring this extraordinary work to the London stage. It is truly a musical for everyone.”

Duncan Sheik (who has a new solo album, Whisper House) and Steven Sater’s production of Spring Awakening premiered Off-Broadway in 2006 at the Atlantic Theater Company. It opened to previews at Broadway’s  Eugene O’Neill Theatre on November 16, 2006, where it officially opened Dec. 10. Spring Awakening closed on Broadway recently, on Jan. 18, 2009, following a total of 888 performances (859 public performances and 29 previews).

  1. Saw this in NYC — brilliant. Duncan Sheik’s new album Whisper House is good, too.
